After two days of waving down strangers as they drove out onto the ice, I met a family that ended up being within the very small percentage of successful spear fishermen on Lake Winnebago during the sturgeon spearfishing season.
Stockbridge, Wisconsin is known as the Sturgeon Center of the World, and is one of the few places where spearfishing for sturgeons occurs in the world. It was a wild experience that I had never come close to having. I had never even walked on a frozen lake before-hearing the ice creaking as trucks drive over it, watching chain saws cut through 20 inches of ice, seeing a community spring up temporarily, and seeing a five prong spear be thrown into the water was all completely new to me.
